Recently, our goal to build a world class workplace mindfulness program led us to the Mindful Leader Summit in Washington D.C. This summit was a fantastic gathering dedicated to the advancement of mindfulness and compassion in the workplace. What we loved about this conference is that it was not your normal conference experience! Our first clue that this would be special was when we learned about the unconference, and we were completely curious.
Soon, the unconference quickly became one of the best takeaways. During the unconference, practical workshops were facilitated, which gave us opportunities to work with other leaders for mutual sharing, ideating, and problem solving. We sought out and found solutions to specific challenges faced in ours, our colleagues, and our client’s environments. Everyone shared their unique knowledge, experience, and talent to provide support and create action plans for others. Not only were we able to learn from other mindful leaders, but we all learned from each other.
And now, we take the learnings and practices from the unconference into our client’s environments as we lead workplace mindfulness programs. Here’s an example. In one session, we dug deep into what happens when a challenge occurs (An unexpected email, perhaps?) that stimulates a reaction or a response in the workplace. Responses will outweigh reactions, and when differing opinions arise, the brain muscle is already accustomed to taking a pause to notice and be aware of what emotion is surfacing. Terise Ryan is the marketing consultant for Mind Body Align and practices mindfulness daily. She is a former teacher who knows the positive impact of the mindful pause- pausing to notice and pay attention to what is going on the the classroom and then making a choice. She often used zoo cams, which are the sights and sounds of nature, to bring her students to attention.
Terise’s early career was spent as a lawyer, but once she noticed the joy she felt when writing and focusing her work on helping others’ lives improve, she began to work in public relations and later teaching. She has owned her own boutique public relations and strategic communications firm for over 20 years. She avidly pursues her love of writing.
A graduate of Villanova University, Terise has a degree in English, the Honor’s Program, and a minor in business. She also earned her law degree from Capital University Law School and was a published Notes Editor on the law review. Terise wrote for the United States Court of Appeals, the Supreme Court of Ohio, the Tenth District Court of Appeals, and the Industrial Commission of Ohio. She worked in the private practice of law in New Albany and led continuing legal education seminars for the Columbus Bar Association for many years.
Terise comes from a legacy of small business owners and teachers, and she chose both for her career. Born in Mansfield, Ohio, she is the daughter of a former dry cleaner who built an international, and yet still small, manufacturing company. In her spare time, Terise enjoys travel, cooking, and reading. She is married to TJ, who works in the software industry, has three vibrant children, and a rescue beagle.
