Reflect and Set Intentions: A Path to Mindful Growth
Wow! It’s difficult to believe it’s December and this year is drawing to a close. The chilly air of winter is persistent on my face as I walk around the farm. I feel both the excitement of the new year and apprehension about what’s ahead. This period, nestled between the festivities of the holiday season and the fresh start of a new year, offers a unique opportunity to pause, look back, and thoughtfully consider the year that has passed.
The Power of Reflection
Reflection can be a very powerful thing! It is not just about recalling the events of the past year; it’s about engaging in a deep, mindful process of evaluating our experiences, acknowledging our growth, and recognizing areas for further development. It’s also a time that encourages us to reconnect with our goals and values, those ways of being that are important to each of us. This mindful practice creates a foundation of self-awareness that is essential for personal and professional growth.
There are several reasons reflection is important. First, it provides clarity. In the hustle of daily life, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. Reflection helps us step back and see the year as a whole, revealing patterns, successes, and areas where we might have gotten off track. Second, reflection fosters gratitude. By reflecting on what went well, we cultivate a sense of appreciation for what worked and the ways in which we courageously lived our values. This pat on the back can increase our overall happiness and well-being. Lastly, reflection aids in learning. Curiosity about who we’re being and who we’ve been puts us into the learning brain. When we take time to analyze our experiences, we transform them into valuable lessons that guide us in the future.
Structuring our Reflection
While the idea of reflection is powerful, it’s important to approach it with intention and structure. A structured reflection process ensures that we are thorough and focused, allowing us to glean the most insight from our experiences. Without structure, reflection can easily become a vague or overwhelming task, one where ruminating and self-criticism take precedence over thoughtfulness and curiosity and where important details are missed or emotions are not fully processed.
Start by setting aside dedicated time and space for reflection. This is not a task to be rushed. Consider creating a calm environment, perhaps with soothing music, a warm cup of tea, or a favorite journal. You might spend a few minutes practicing a mindful breathing exercise to calm your mind and body. Then, guide our reflection with specific questions or prompts. For example:
- What were my biggest achievements this year? What worked? What can be learned and improved upon?
- What challenges did I face? How did I overcome them? What did I learn? How will my future choices reflect this learning?
- What have I learned about myself? How will that alter my choices and actions in the future?
- How did I grow in my personal and professional life? What can I do to ensure I continue to grow and learn?
- What brought me the most joy? What can I do to bring more of that joy into my life?
- Are there areas in my life where I felt out of alignment with my values? What am I learning about the sensation of being out of alignment? How might I use this information to quickly bring myself into alignment in the future?
These prompts help us dive deep into our experiences and ensure that our reflection is both meaningful and actionable.
Creating a Vision for the Future
After reflecting on the past year, the next step is to look forward with purpose and intention. This is where visioning comes into play. For many years, I had the privilege of leading a vision boarding workshop each January for a group of inspiring women. This all-day event was more than just an art project; it was a deeply immersive experience designed to help participants visualize their ideal futures. We began with visualization exercises, using guided imagery to tap into our deepest aspirations and dreams. Music, carefully curated to inspire creativity and introspection, filled the room, setting the tone for the day. Healthy, nourishing food fueled our bodies, while a wide variety of magazines provided the materials needed to create our vision boards.
Creating a vision is about imagining the future we want to build—a future that aligns with our values, desires, and goals. A clear vision provides direction and motivation, serving as a compass that guides our decisions and actions throughout the year.
The process of vision boarding is powerful because it transforms abstract goals into tangible representations. By selecting images and words that resonate with our aspirations, we create a visual roadmap for the year ahead. This visual reminder of our intentions can be incredibly motivating, serving as a daily prompt to stay focused on what truly matters to us. I suggest each person place the vision board in a spot where it can be seen daily. Allow the vision board to remind us of our aspirations and our dreams.
Setting Intentions
Setting an intention is different from making a resolution. While resolutions often focus on specific outcomes (e.g., “I will lose 10 pounds”), intentions are broader and more reflective of our values and purpose (e.g., “I will nourish my body with healthy, mindful choices”). Intentions are about the journey rather than the destination; they guide our actions in a way that aligns with our authentic self.
There are many fun and meaningful ways to set an intention. Aside from vision boarding, consider creating a mantra—a simple phrase that encapsulates our intention and can be repeated daily to reinforce our focus. Another way is to write a letter to our future self, describing life, as if we are living it, the way we wish to create it. Describe the sights, sounds, and smells that will surround us; detail the behaviors, thoughts, and actions that we intend to embody in this future life. Another idea is to choose a word of the year—a single word that embodies our intention and serves as a touchstone for our decisions and actions.
Whatever method is chosen, the key is to ensure that our intention is authentic and rooted in what is truly important to each of us. This authenticity will make it easier to stay committed to our intention throughout the year, even when challenges arise.
