Reflect and Set Intentions: A Path to Lifelong Growth

Wow! It’s difficult to believe it’s December and this year is drawing to a close. The chilly air of winter is persistent on my face as I walk around the farm. I feel both the excitement of the new year and apprehension about what’s ahead.

This period, nestled between the festivities of the holiday season and the fresh start of a new year, offers a unique opportunity to pause, look back, and thoughtfully consider the year that has passed.

The Power of Reflection

Reflection can be a very powerful thing! It’s not simply recalling the events of the past year; it is an exercise which engages in a deep, contemplative process of evaluating your experiences, acknowledging your growth, and recognizing areas for further development. It’s also a time that encourages you to reconnect with your goals and values. Values are the ways that you live your life and the character traits that are most important to you. This introspective practice creates a foundation of self-awareness that is essential for personal and professional growth.

There are several reasons reflection is important.

  • It provides clarity. In the hustle of daily life, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. Reflection helps you step back and see the year as a whole, revealing patterns, successes, and areas where you might have gotten off track.
  • It fosters gratitude. By reflecting on what went well, you cultivate a sense of appreciation for what worked and the ways in which you courageously lived your values.  This pat on the back can increase your overall happiness and well-being.
  • Aids in learning. Curiosity about who you’re becoming and who you’ve been can shift your mind into a state that supports learning. When you take time to analyze your experiences, you transform them into insights that can guide your choices in the future.

Structuring your Reflection

While the idea of reflection is powerful, it’s important to approach it with intention and structure. A structured reflection process ensures that you are thorough and focused, allowing you to glean the most insight from your experiences. Without structure, reflection can easily become a vague or overwhelming task, one where ruminating and self-criticism take precedence over thoughtfulness and curiosity and where important details are missed or emotions are not fully processed.

Start by setting aside dedicated time and space for reflection. This is not a task to be rushed. Consider creating a calm environment, perhaps with soothing music, a warm cup of tea, or a favorite journal. You might spend a few minutes practicing a breathing exercise to calm your mind and body. My favorite is a simple square breath which is done by inhaling for a count of 4, pausing for a count of 4, exhaling for a count of 4, pausing for 4, then repeating the sequence three or four times. Then, guide your reflection with specific questions or prompts. For example:

  • What were my biggest achievements this year? What worked?  What can be learned and improved upon?
  • What challenges did I face? How did I overcome them? What did I learn? How will my future choices reflect this learning?
  • What have I learned about myself? How will that alter my choices and actions in the future?
  • How did I grow in my personal and professional life?  What can I do to ensure I continue to grow and learn?
  • What brought me the most joy? What can I do to bring more of that joy into my life?
  • Are there areas in my life where I felt out of alignment with my values?  What am I learning about the sensation of being out of alignment? How might I use this information to quickly bring myself into alignment in the future?

These prompts help you dive deep into your experiences and ensure that your reflection is both meaningful and actionable.

After reflecting on the past year, the next step is to look forward with purpose and intention.

Creating your Vision for the Future

Creating your vision is a process of imagining the future you want to create for yourself. If done intentionally, it can unlock a future that aligns with your values, desires, and goals. It can also provide direction and motivation, serving as a compass that guides your decisions and actions throughout the year.

The method I use for clarifying and solidifying my vision is a vision board.

For many years, I had the privilege of leading a vision boarding workshop each January for a group of inspiring women. This all-day event was more than just an art project; it was a deeply immersive experience designed to help participants visualize their ideal futures. We began with visualization exercises to tap into our deepest aspirations and dreams, music curated to inspire creativity and introspection, nourishing food to fuel our bodies, and a wide variety of magazines and art supplies provided the materials needed to transfer our visions to paper.

The process of vision boarding is powerful because it transforms abstract goals into tangible representations. By selecting images and words that resonate with your aspirations like a woman riding a bike, a book resting on a colorful beach blanket with the ocean in the background, or the romantic glow of a candlelit table, your vision board can become a visual roadmap. These images might represent joyful bike rides, sunny days with nothing but a book, water, and sunshine, or long evenings filled with conversation with a romantic partner. This visual representation of your deepest desires can be incredibly motivating, serving as a daily reminder to stay focused on what truly matters to you.

I suggest you place the vision board in a spot where it can be seen daily.

Setting Intentions

Setting an intention is different from making a resolution. While resolutions often focus on specific outcomes (e.g., “I will lose 10 pounds”), intentions are broader and more reflective of your values and purpose (e.g., “I will nourish my body with healthy choices”). Intentions are about the journey rather than the destination; they guide your actions in a way that aligns with your best self.

There are many fun and meaningful ways to set an intention. Aside from vision boarding.

  • Consider creating a mantra. A mantra is a simple phrase that encapsulates your intention and can be repeated daily to reinforce your focus. How could phrases like: I move with purpose, I welcome what nourishes me, or I lead with curiosity influence how you live your life?
  • Write a letter to your future self. In the letter describe your life in 3 years, 5 years, 10 years, as if you are actually living it. Describe the sights, sounds, and smells that surround you; detail your behaviors, thoughts, and actions. (Dear Grace, today I had that hard conversation with my boss.  I practiced my words, body language, and reactions with James and wouldn’t you know, I got the promotion.  My heart was beating fast, and I was feeling short of breath, but I did it…I am so excited and proud of myself.)
  • Choose your word of the year. This is a single word that embodies your intention and serves as a touchstone for your decisions and actions. How could selecting a word like: thoughtful, grateful, healthy, confident, or purposeful, influence the choices you make?

Whatever method is chosen, the key is to ensure that you have reflected on the character traits and lifestyle that are most important to you. This authenticity will make it easier to stay committed to your intention throughout the year, even when challenges arise.

You are Invited

Both reflection and visioning are powerful tools for personal and professional growth. By taking the time to thoughtfully consider where you’ve been and where you want to go, you empower yourself to live with greater purpose, clarity, and alignment.

I hope you’ll join me in reflecting on the past year and setting intentions. May this season of reflection and intention-setting bring you closer to the life you envision!
